Today is Papertrey Ink's group post day... and I'm so excited to share what I made with you!
A few weeks ago my eldest daughter, a Senior in H.S., competed in the regional competition for Poetry Out Loud. I had missed out on seeing her compete at the local level because of having two of my other daughters needed me to transport them. They are a bunch of busy girls. Anyhow, as I listened to Alex recite her first poem of the night my heart swelled. Her delivery was heartfelt and sincere... and the words of the poem pierced me through and through. The poem is entitled Famous by Naomi Shihab Nye and if you have an extra moment to read it I highly recommend it... it brings much perspective!
If you are wondering why on earth I am talking about this poem, well... it has everything to do with my project today. The words in the last stanza of the poem hit me like a rain in a drought. It totally put words to the feelings that I've been trying to live, not only personally but professionally. I knew I wanted to create something for my home to remind me and my girls of the perspective. The newest Button Boutiques set was the perfect set to create with in making my wall art!
The first thing I did was to paint my frame with mat black paint, then I sanded it to add some shabbiness.
After that I sponged it with light brown ink.
Every little detail, font combination and button image brings that nostalgic feeling. There are so many combinations too. I created some fun button cards to decorate the frame for the stanza. I snapped a photo of each one up close...
I alternated having colored cards with black buttons with black imaged cards with colored buttons on the frame. This card also uses Forest Friends.
A little Fleur-de-lis from Embelishments added in the middle.
The sentiments work both on top or bottom of the card. Love that!
Each button image has been threaded with button twine.
This one is threaded a little differently for some extra fun!
The butterfly is a sweet little addition for this card, from Butterfly Dreams.
Classic vintage.
I loved adding this little flourish from the Calendar Basics Set
This last one is the mash up of a few of the buttons in the set. So pretty huh!
Here is the finished project. After printing the stanza I stamped some diamond from A Little Argyle to add more depth to the entire project.
Please click on the photo to see the project in more detail.
Here are the words from the poem stanza that I printed for the wall art...
"I want to be famous in the way a pulley is famous,
but because it never forgot what it could do."
I want to be a Buttonhole... never forgetting what I can do. I want Alex to remember this when she goes off to college next year. That through her sorrows and joys, she is a strong and capable woman. That she will never forget what she can do! I'm so grateful for all of you who are buttonholes in my life... keeping things together by just being you!
