Paper Crafts Magazine Presents: Color Inspiration for Card Makers Blog Hop

Last Summer I submitted several cards to a Paper Crafts magazine call, It was quite a journey I tell you. The color combinations that were put out to us to use to submit were very different for me and a real creative stretch. I don't live close to a store that carried most of the paper colors too. I really had to get creative and see what I had on hand. I find that I tend to bloom in that situation.  I was so excited to get several picked up for the special issue, now known as Color Inspiration for Card Makers!

When I first browsed the pages of the published issue I was in awe. There are color combinations in there that frankly had me shakin' in my boots when submitting. I see how lovely the cards turned out that the other designers created and my breath is taken away! I think this is one of the most inspiring issues to date!

We've all been asked to create a never before seen card using the same color combination as the card on the cover of the issue. This combination was one that I liked but was nervous about when submitting so it was fun to push myself to make this combo work with my style. So how about a Valentines card that is in a non-traditional color combo?

I wanted to tone down the brightness just a little so I decided to use only Fresh Snow ink for my stamping. I use my own lOvE Songs stamp set (Available through Papertrey Ink) for this card. It's really fun to see how this card came together with a few different details. Those Zva Creative Crystals add SO much to a card.

A little close up of the sentiment circle... "All you need is love. Love is all you need."  While I created this for a valentines card I really could use this for other occasions like thinking of you.

I had a lot of fun creating for submissions for this issue. I think the thing I loved the most was realizing that I could work with color in a way that wasn't typical for me.

lOvE songs: The Best of the Best!

Every time I release a new stamp set I feel like I have sent my semi-musical child to Juilliard.... When I see what the Papertrey Ink DT creates with my sets it's like being at that Juilliard recital and that child is shining on stage! (might be a weird analogy but makes sense to me! LOL!) I present to you ...lOvE songs.... The best of the BEST!!!

lOvE Songs: Up Where We Belong

This week has really flown by... I've completely loved sharing lOvE songs with you! What a blast! Are you ready for the final song???

Up Where We Belong- This song was created for the Movie, An Office and a Gentleman in 1982...Performed by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes. (here is the clip from You Tube). I saw the edited T.V. version later when I was in High Schoo and... Um... I LOVED this movie... Richard Gere... um... well he sort of took my breath away in it... the story was powerful and insightful and this song was the cherry on top for me! I will always remember him walking into the factory and sweeping her off her feet while everyone clapped! So romantic! I remember dancing to this at the very first dance I attended.

When thinking of this song I knew I needed an image that could could signify love being lifted up.. a heart shaped balloon quickly came to mind! I'm proud of the final balloon image... it's harder than it looks to create a rounded, flowing image that appears light and "float-able"! LOL! I also knew I wanted a slight change in the sentiment by adding an "s" to the word "lift" (as is in the lyrics) I felt this worked better for a paper-crafting sentiment. (Remember, this set is based on the songs, not directly quoting them all) Together the imagery is really sweet!

 

 

I used Copic Markersto color in and pop out the balloons... I love the option to color or have an image to fill in... again... more bang for the buck. (maybe POP is a better word for this card though! LOL!) Here is a card using the solid filled in image!

 

 

You can also use the sentiment as the balloon string for a little creative twist!

lOvE songs: Love Is All You Need & You're the First, the Last, My Everything

I have another yummy lOvE songs project for you today! Nichole gave you a little peek at one of the images yesterday with her amazing Rice Crispy cone! So cool! (are you guys singing all week with me... maybe we should put our own little You Tube Video together! LOL!) What's your favorite song so far?

On to the next songs!

Love Is All You Need- This song was released by the Beatles in 1967- (video clip) a little before my time but it's a classic and has such a strong message of LOVE! I remember tuning my ear to the swanky horns when I first heard the song as a little girl. It's so cool.  It's a song of love that blankets all aspects of our lives. (I can't remember is this song was in the yellow submarine movie. Anyone know?) I lovehow this is a song about love... not just a love song!

You're the First, the Last, My Everything- The first 8 counts of this song are unmistakable! Barry White released this song in 1974 and brings this swinging soulful tune to life with his deep, full voice.(audio clip) It's such a happy song...a definite dance song. (having Alli McBeal flash backs, LOL!) This song gives me an eternal feeling...all encompassing. Whenever I hear it at a dance I grab my husband and happy dance! Try it.... it will make you smile!

Both of these songs brought circular imagery to mind when contemplating companion images. I decided that the sentiments themselves needed to be circular with the ability to have a heart image in the center of the sentiment. Here is a fun treat project that shows all the images together!

I thought it would be fun to create some heart shaped candy melt suckers!

 

I first sprinkled some primary colored sprinkles in my mold... then put the melted White Chocolate in the mold with the sticks. I wanted to create something that I can mass produce later for my girls' school valentines exchange. this is simple enough that they can do it themselves... right up my ally!

Here are a few finished suckers all wrapped up  with some little punched faces!

 

You can see why I thought of circular images with "All You Need is Love" ... the lyrics go around and around naturally! (notice how the images perfectly coordinate with the Extra Jumbo circle punches!)

Here is where "You're the First, the Last, My Everything" comes into play. (almost all of the other images fit into this sentiment for an extra bonus!)  I can't tell you how much effort it took to keep my girls from eating these before I could snap a photo! LOL!

 

This was such a blast to make! I could probably fit 5 suckers in here... I can imagine giving this as a hostess gift as well as a valentines gift.

I also wanted to share the one image used as an "o".... I've included the remainder of the letters to make the word "lOvE" ... so many uses when put together like this!

   

I can see this on a scrapbook page, cards, mini books.... Oh... How cute would that be... a Mini book with this as the title on the front!

lOvE songs: I Melt With You & How Sweet It Is

 It's a yummy countdown day today! I'm SO excited to share todays lOvE songs project with you! only a few more days left to share.... what's fun about today's sentiments and images are that they can work with either image... again, more bang for the buck!

I Melt With You- (one person guessed this too!) This song by Modern English came out when I was in Junior High, 1982. Video's were just becoming popular... I remember staying up late on Friday nights to watch "Friday Night Videos" because we hadn't gotten MTV in Alaska yet. Here is the Video for the song... in true 80's fashion! (yes ladies and gents, I had mile high bangs too! Remember Aqua Net? LOL!) This classic 80's song twangs my heart a little too because my Husband is such a classic rock man and we love this song together. When I started singing this song in my head, thinking about stamp images, an Ice Cream Cone popped into my head... It's Perfect! My husband melts my heart!

I was pondering what unique project I could come up with for this image combination.As I was laying there in bed this came to me...just wait until you see...

 

First...trim a section of a wafer cookie... vanilla worked for me for this project.

 

this part is a tad "different"... create a hole in the middle of a mini marshmallow and put the cookie piece through it. I sort of squished it with my clean fingers to get the hole.

 

I then used some melted white chocolate to adhere a squished marshmallow on top. let it sit for about 5 minutes. Next...swirl the mini cone into the melted chocolate and then sprinkle with pretty stuff! Here is where working at TCBY in my senior year really paid off... check out that swirl! LOL!

 

I know! How cute is that!!!

 

I bought this cuttlebug embossing folder to accompany this image, I thought it was perfect. I created a little "cone box"  (4.25 x 3.25- scored in at 1 in. and 1.25 in.) yes, Melis' awsome designs pushed me over the edge last month and I jumped in an got me a cuttlebug, I fought it for years.  Melissa Rocks!(provo craft owes you some big bucks girl!)

 

I added some of the new Raspberry Fizz twill and some scalloped white cardstock for a finishing touch.

 

I have to say that my kids came home and freaked out with how cute this turned out... and yes they ate up the little cones as fast as they could! I bet these would be fun with the cones chocolate dipped too!

 next...another yummy song...

How Sweet It Is- Originally released by Marvin Gaye, James Taylor went on to remake it in 1975. Here is an audio clip from You Tube with the song if you want to hear it (he has such a soulfully voice). I have some fond memories of my pre-Alaska childhood in Northern California... always barefoot, riding in the VW bus and walking along the Santa Cruise boardwalk (yep, my mom was a bit of a hippie)... This song was one that I heard and sung to many times. (pretty sure we had it on 8 track tape... spooky huh!) What could be sweeter than Chocolate.. Yum! These Chocolate dish images are a great complement to the song!

I thought I would show you a simple project... who doesn't like a See's Chocolate bar?

 

 

I love how the heart images look with crystal effects applied to them! Such a quick and easy way to give a little memento of appreciation or love! The dish image also looks awesome in silver... very elegant!

You all have been making some fantastic and fun guesses as to what songs you think are in the set... Some were correct ....Some of  I didn't use but would make great stamps! (Hmmmmm...) Any more guesses?

I'm loving the excitement that you've already shared about my newest stamp set, lOvE songs. It's so nice to hear your thoughts and feeling! Thank You! I hope you are also enjoying the musical background and links... it's been so fun to put together for you! (for those who are new, this set will be released on Dec. 15th through Papertrey Ink.)

Unforgettable- I first heard this song when young but it really stuck when Natalie Cole did a remake/remix of her father's song. (here is a You Tube link to the video!) I instantly fell in love. Both Father (Nat King Cole) and Daughter have amazing voices that posses a depth of soul that is profound. I'm a HUGE fan of classic R&B... I sometime feel I was born in the wrong era! LOL!

When I thought of "unforgettable" things in my life... in love that is... the first kiss with my husband came to mind. It was on our 3rd date and he literally swept me off my feet. I knew in that moment that I loved him. He took me back to that same spot a month later and asked me to marry him! People thought we were nuts but it's been 16 years now... he is still my best friend that I deeply love and his love for me is unforgettable. *sigh*

Here is a fun pocket card  and treat bag using the outline Kiss & solid Kiss together!

This card also previews the "xo" strip image that is perfect for creating backgrounds for any loving occasion.

 

This little Papertrey bag was perfect for the strawberry puff gummy candy that I bought... a little of the pink and white color shows through to tie it perfectly to the card base! 

 

The Kiss outline image can also be colored in with markers or watercolored!

next is...

P. S I love you- Another nostalgic song that hearkens back to the mid 1930's when Rudy Vallee first recorded it. It's been remade ever since then but such greats as Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme and Billie Holiday. I think they all do the song justice. I love the version that Bette Midler released in 1991 for the "For the Boys" soundtrack. (it's a great soundtrack!) Here is a audio clip from You Tube. There is also a scene from the movie on there that is a direct clip where she sings live to the soldiers after the lights go out about 3 minutes into the clip she starts up with the song. She's a little swanky in the first 3, LOL!) this song reminds me of long distance love... I've experienced it and the power of a written letter is incredible.

An image for this song was a no-brainer for me... an envelope was a must! I wanted to note that the little heart in the envelope is the same one that is used for the sand pail...more bang for your buck!

 

I created this ensemble with a masculine feel... It's something I will give my husband too.

 

The Heart tin holds little envelopes made with this envelope punch . Each little envelope contains reasons why I love him.. I didn't have time to make a million envelopes though. ;)  Image wise, I made sure that the envelope image would also fit with the smallest of the Marvy Clever Lever Extra Jumbo scalloped Rectangle punch (yellow one), You know me... I love coordinating punches!

Well, I've shared 3 songs so far. Any guesses as to what other song inspirations the set holds? :) any guesses as to what song the Ice Cream cone goes with? Come on... make a guess! I will share a project tomorrow using that fun image!

lOvE songs: Love Will Keep Us Together

There are so many great memories that go along with the creation of my newest stamp set through Papertrey Ink ...  lOvE songs! (being released Dec. 15th) I'm ecstatic to finally be able to share a bit about it!

lOvE songs is a fun valentines set  of 38 stamps in which the images and sentiments are based on some of the most popular and memorable songs about love. I have some wonderful memories of these songs and I think you will get a kick out of the many memories you will have too as I share this week!

I wanted to start off the countdown with one of my most favorite image combinations in the set... The inspiration for these images is a song that Captain & Tennille made popular in 1975.... "Love Will Keep Us Together". ( You Tube Clip of the songs) Now... I was about 7 when this song came out yet I became a huge fan and can remember putting the record on (yes... a real black record, LOL!) and dancing around. I fell in love with Captain (I was only 7 so you have to cut me some slack!) and wanted to sing just like Toni Tennille when I grew up! I can remember listening to it for years and still loving it.  Anyhow, it was one of the first songs that came to mind when the set concept was born. I wanted to include some images in the set that could be used for more than just valentines day and while contemplating this particular song a few things came to mind... there needed to be two images that were meant to be together and they needed to be cute. Suddenly a sand pail and bucket popped into my head... being inspired by the nautical cap that Captain used to always wear.

I love how the curve in the handle turned out! Imagine all the color combination possibilities! Here is the ensemble that I put together to showcase the Sand Pail and Shovel...

   

I used the Men of Life pattern paper to accent the ensemble. (I can see the little hear tin pail used for a beach themed wedding too!)

 

I played on the pail image by creating a faux pail with the Papertrey Small Heart tin! These are great for Any occasion and are so easy to decorate! I filled it with salt water taffy to keep with the beach theme. The shovel is a great accent to the Kraft handle that has been attached to the tin with heart shaped brads. (I punched the hole with a Crop-a-dile)

  

I love Red sand shovels! there is something so nostalgic about seeing then in the sand. I used a mixed glitter (fawn color) to give the sand appearance to the card... I also thought that the Swiss dot embossing folder would be a nice compliment.

 

You will see how the little solid heart fits with other images in the set later in the countdown too!
